Steph's Thoughts: Friendship

As I get older, I realize who my true friends are and the more I appreciate having them in my life. Ginger, obviously, being one of them. (I will write a separate post on why Ginger is such an awesome friend). However, after an incident that happened last year, I am less open to friendships and relationships. It’s just harder for me to trust people.

A friend is easy to make. Just have a few things in common, be nice to one another, and you’re set. Friendship accepted. However, a true friend is like finding someone to love, it’s much harder. In my opinion, a true and good friend is one who ultimately wants you to be happy and helps you to become a better person, much like how your significant other should, too. They lend you their ear when you’re heartbroken or just when you need to rant, Ginger’s specialty. They’re the ones who know when and how to give you criticism when necessary. They’re just awesome.

I’m still relatively young and have a lot to learn about life. So, let’s just say I’m not an expert when it comes to friendship and many other things. I was deeply betrayed once by someone whom I considered a close friend for almost 10 years. Despite warnings from friends for many years, I ignored them all and let this “friendship” drain the life out of me until in just the span of a minute, it all dawned on me and it was over. It’s a pain that has subsided over the past year, however, it does not erase many years of memories and the memory of that betrayal.

I often think about that friend and wish that our friendship really was as genuine I had thought it was all those years. I wonder what we’d be like if the incident had not happened. Alas, the incident did happen, an apology was never told, and I was deeply hurt. Only thing to do is just be grateful of the true friends who remain true and supportive.

So, here’s a shout out to SMAACCS + MS who are the best friends I could ever ask for. Honestly, I never knew how lucky I am until recently. You are all so awesome in all your quirky ways. You’ve been the rock in my life, my hugs, my inner peace, my everything-good-in-my-life. Thank you.

sweater weather

I guess this is a trend that you've noticed: Ham and I are not really big on accessories. Except if we had to, we would have paired this outfit with our pair of snake earrings from Urban Outfitters that I cannot seem to find right now. Alas, for dangling earrings they are pretty small so they're not that noticeable anyways. This is our transition piece into fall. We wanted to look cool and casual while still being able to retain some sort of heat in the evening.

Ham's boyfriend made the shirt for her. He took a plain black crew neck and sewed a patterned piece of fabric for the breast pocket. I love the twist of dorky with chic. The sweater vest was indeed from the men's section, and it was probably meant for grandpas, but what's wrong with getting inspired by our elders? :P

So I guess we've finally acknowledged Fall's arrival. Hello, there. Feel free to stay for a bit (or leave).

Steph's Thoughts: Boys and the Friend Zone

I’m a major fan of British Youtubers. One of them is Sprinkle of Glitter, Louise, who also writes pretty awesome blogs. Her most recent one is on boys. An area in which, at the age of 22, I am still very lost.

Despite having a few close guy friends and often being considered as “one of the guys,” I honestly don’t get them still when it comes to relationships. Some of them are the most amazing friends ever, but they’re not so great to their girlfriends. Ginger and I believe that all guys are (excuse the language in this blog) douchebags. It’s just a matter of what level of douchebagginess they are. Now, don’t worry guys. We also believe it is the same with girls and bitchiness. And...we can be just as confusing when it comes to relationships.

Now then, back to the content of Louise’s blog. One of the questions her followers asked really struck out with me: I like one of my close guy friends, who I think used to like me a while ago but I'm not sure if he still does. What should I do? Personally, I know from experience that falling for a friend is a really scary thing. You want more than the current friendship, yet you’re afraid of the risks especially since things are already going…relatively well.

Louise responded to the initial question by saying: If you're brave- tell him how you feel. If you're not- hint. A LOT. I love a bit of risk so I'd just out and out say it. It could turn out REALLY well!

I’m definitely a part of the not-brave crew. I’m basically such a wuss that I don’t even hint. I am extremely pro-“friendship to love” because I think it works for me. But like I said, it can get scary when you’re in the friend zone ESPECIALLY when competition and jealousy come into play. In my case, I tense up (not good), I freeze (really not good), and I become emo (definitely not what Louise would condone). Basically, I allow myself to stay in the friendzone. I got lucky once by getting out of it, but I had also been stuck for a really long time with my first crush but that one doesn’t really count since I think I wasn’t ready to date yet with that guy. I was just a kid!

Even now, I do the same thing. But I think I’ll just go with the flow which surprisingly worked that one time. Anyways, I guess what I’m getting at is: do what feels right to you. Don’t force anything, but don’t be pushed around either. If it’s meant to work out it will, just have hope and faith in yourself…and hope that boy you like is smart enough to like you back and ask you out!

Wishing you all the best,
Steph

Steph's Weekend 09/20-09/21

This past weekend I attended a couple clubs' Icebreakers. Icebreakers are usually opening events for student clubs to let everyone meet other members and executives of the club. They're generally pretty fun and well executed. So, definitely check some out.

The first one I attended was a club I was president of last year. This year I helped out as team leader. It made me realize I do miss being a part of my big family and organizing events. However, being a club executive of a VERY social club can be tiring and stressful. As much as I learned from this club especially as president, I'm glad I retired. I just need to mellow out from a somewhat dramatic year.

Back to the icebreaker. The turnout was even better than last year. My team really got along with each other. We took lots of cute pictures at the photobooth where the lovely event coordination designed to look like the Milky Way. Unfortunately, the prizes were not as great as before, but everyone does things differently and the important thing is that the event itself was a success.
How do I look with a 'stache?
The next day, I attended another icebreaker of a friend''s club. This friend was president the same year as me and we became pretty good friends so I tend to show my support at his club's events. I really liked how they promoted Taiwanese culture by naming the groups with Taiwanese aboriginal tribes and incorporated Monopoly into the event. We all went to dinner after, but I was REALLY tired by then, so I went home after having my fill of all you can eat sushi.

Some other stuff happened during the weekend, but it's pretty personal. I'll most likely write another blog related to it. Anyways, before I sign off, here's a song that I've been enjoying the past month.

Toodles~

Ramen Burger

I'm actually not much of a cook, but I made myself an open-faced ramen burger the other day. I usually don't like to follow any sort of recipe very closely (unless it's baking!), so I base my creations loosely on others' recipes and then add twists of my own. I followed Sorted's Ramen Burger recipe,  except I added cheese and my special sauce (teriyaki, siracha, sweet balsamic reduction, dash of salt and pepper and honey). The egg really made the burger special though in my opinion. Also, don't go without the original ramen packet soup base. Make sure that you add that in there somehow. I also added some chipotle mayo. Hamela deemed this the Asian double down. Haha.

To be honest, I didn't eat the other ramen bun, it was super delicious but I just didn't need it. Overall I think this burger deserves an 8/10. I really want to try the Cronuts next, but they're like the trashy version of a macaron/super fancy version of a regular donut. Either way, it seems difficult to make and even more unhealthy than my ramen burger.

save me one last summer

Summer is gone now, and last week we experienced the infamous Indian Summer. It was sweltering, but my pool was not clean because we hadn't used it for a good week or two, so I had no good means of cooling off. Ham decided to embrace the warmth and went with a cute skirt-and-bustier combo.

our landscape really needs some work haha!
Again, there is quite going on here with the floral prints on both the bustier and the skirt, so we kept everything else minimalistic. The only jewelry Ham has on are her default braided bracelets that she never takes off.

Anyways, I guess this is really our last homage to what I call the perfect summer. The perfect weather, the perfect times with friends. You were real good to me, summer. Come back soon.

Happy Birthday to my Little Sister

I'm 22 years old. My sister is 14. Although we are 7 years apart, we've always been super close. We may not always be on the same page, but we tend do everything together, like eating, watching TV, and purposely excluding our brother (just to tease him, I swear).

I'm not saying that Hamela is perfect - in fact, she pisses me off to no end on a regular basis. We bicker a lot about everything from clothes to curfews to toothbrushes. But for a 14 year old, she exceeds my high expectations for any respectable human being: she is thoughtful, considerate and grounded. She, despite being so young, inspires me to be a better person everyday. That is the kind of person we should all try to be.

So happy birthday little sister. I hope that you continue to live a blessed life.

Admittedly, neither of these are Hamela's cake. The round one was a custom cake for myself (it was the best classic cake I've ever had), and the bottom one was for my mom. That one was out of this world. We got Hamela's cake already, but either way, it's 1 in the afternoon so obviously Ham is still at school, and we can't eat her cake without her.

HAPPY BIRFDAY YEW FOOL

to the edge of the earth

Summer is nearing to an end, so my sister Ham and I took a bunch of photos of our summer outfits as well as some of our transition outfits to fall. First off: Ham and I do not own a huge wardrobe with the trendiest pieces. Rather, we own a modest closet (that we somewhat share - as in she always wears my stuff) with clothes that we feel like reflect us the best. I chose my sister to showcase the outfits because, well to be frank, she wears clothes much better than I do. She also puts in a lot of effort to look nice, whereas you'll find me in sweats and a t-shirt most of the time.

Ham's crop top is pretty much a statement piece, so we paired it with simple, washed out powder blue shorts from Forever21. We wanted to go with a summery feel so we went with our default gold old-navy flip flops.

After we shot this, we realized that we forgot to add accessories, and by that time it was already dark. To be honest, I don't think that there is really a need for it, but I guess a nice simple gold bangle or a simple chain necklace would do (gold please)!

Steph’s Morning Skin Care Routine (Fall 2013)

Just a little disclaimer: I am no skincare expert, nor do I have the best skin ever. I have some acne scarring, and I occasionally break out. However, my friend, M, requested that I write this blog. Didn’t know what else to write this week, so here we go. My morning routine for the fall.

Every now and then I need to change up my routine, depending on the weather and my skin condition. Fall involves more moisturizing and calming products as my skin tends to get dry and RED! Sadly, Vancouver is cold most of the year and I’m still trying to find the perfect combination of products to defeat the winter harshness while not irritating my sensitive skin. So, for my mornings, I like having a clean, bright, and moisturized feeling on my face to battle the dry weather of Raincouver.

Estée Lauder Perfectly Clean Splash Away Foaming Cleanser
This product makes my face feel like a clean slate in the morning so that I can easily absorb my skincare, and effortlessly set my make up if I decide to put some on that day. I love using this in the morning because of its super fresh and awakening scent.

H20+ Face Oasis Dual-Action Exfoliating Cleanser
If I plan on going out for a long day (weekends), I’ll use an exfoliating cleanser. I realize my BB cream sits better with this on. However, I’m still not quite satisfied with this product as I feel like my pores have not really become less noticeable. So, if anyone has any good recommendations for pore-minimizing exfoliators/cleansers, please let me know.

Simple Soothing Facial Toner
I picked this product up this summer because I’ve heard that this brand is well received from people with sensitive skin. After using this product, I’ve gotta say this is one of my current favourite skin products. It does the job a toner should do without (FINALLY) leaving my skin irritated. Another great thing is that it’s a drugstore product which is great on my credit card bill.

Estée Lauder Even Skintone Illuminator
I don’t really wear face make-up so I try to achieve a glowing/bright look with just my skin care products. So, in the morning I use this brightening serum. Since using this product, the redness in my skin has greatly decreased and definitely brightens up my face (as in I feel like I don’t even need to use a highlight).

Estée Lauder DayWear Advanced Multi-Protection Anti-Oxidant Crème Broad Spectrum SPF15
I apply this a few minutes after the serum so that I can let it soak in first. This moisturizer is another one of my favourites because it just feels so light, yet very moisturizing. Not to mention the smell. The faint cucumber scent is a great way to start the morning.

Origins Ginzing (Eye Cream)
So, I’ve been using this product for 1-2 months now, and I still don’t really know what to make out of it. It’s supposed to be a brightening and de-puffing eye cream. Sometimes, I notice the results instantly, which the product claims should happen. However, at other times I feel like it’s just a pearlescent sheen over my dark circles. I don’t know if it’s because of how I apply it. Sometimes I get lazy and don’t apply eye cream “properly.” Nevertheless, I will confirm that, personally, it has definitely helped with the puffiness over time.

Kiehl`s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50
ALL TIME FAV! I picked up this product as soon as it came out a couple years ago. Since I’d been a Kiehl’s fan for a while, I decided to give this product a try since no other sunblock was working on my face. My face gets extremely irritated and red with other sunblocks, but THIS DOESN’T DO IT TO ME! <3 The scent, the light and quick-absorbing texture, the application are all so freakishly amazing. This is seriously my holy grail during the summer. It may seem a bit expensive, but seriously, a little goes a loooong way with this product. I’ve been using this on my face every day for the past six months and I still have a third left? (I don’t always use this product during the fall since my cream/BB cream already has SPF in it, I just see how the weather is gonna be that day.)

Kiehl`s Lip Balm #1
Another one of my long time favourites is also a Kiehl’s product. Although, I don’t always use this lip balm in the day time, it is one that I tend to grab right before I leave my apartment during the colder seasons. I’m a bit of a lip product junkie, so perhaps I’ll write a separate post for it.

Cheers!
-          Steph

Another Disclaimer: All the products were either gifts from friends or purchased with my own money.
I’m too much of a noob to be sponsored LOL.

Ginger Journal 14/09/13

The first two weeks of school are usually the best. The weather is sweltering, no one has homework yet (not true), and there are always vendors in the Student Union Building selling necessities at cheap prices. There are also a lot of booths set up by communication companies (Shaw, Telus, etc) who give out cool stuff and a bunch of radio stations that blast obnoxious upbeat music - but it's okay, because it's the First Week of School. On Friday I had some extra time to go around the campus, so I decided to enjoy everything it had to offer.

First at 11, I heard that someone flooded this beautiful piece of useless crap:

with bubbles!! by pouring in bubble bath into it.

LOL at the guy in the fountain

Unfortunately, I didn't get to witness this amazing spectacle, so I got a friend to send me a photo that her friend took. By the time I got there, I only saw fluffs of bubbles rolling outside the fountain, but not much else. So brilliant though.

After my last class, I had some time to kill before heading off to tutor, so I decided to eat the best cookie ever. This one is called Marbelous. It truly is.

chocolate cookie with white chocolate

I decided to wander around campus with my still-warm cookie and saw that a local band was playing outside the SUB.

The Hooves

Not my cup of tea in terms of music, but they were most definitely: passionate, talented, and beautiful. The lead singer gave me chills. I couldn't really find an official poster or whatnot on their Facebook page, but I thought this was cute:

Yup.

Ginger Thoughts: Conversation with a stranger

I will occasionally buy myself lunch at the school cafeteria in the Student Union Building. I typically wake up at 5 AM, 3 days a week, so I find myself having difficulty mustering the will to make myself food. I'm fortunate enough, however, that on most days, my mom is willing to pack an extra lunch while she makes one for my younger sister. This was not one of those days. So I went into the caf, bought myself some Chinese noodles and picked a seat at an empty two-seater table. Five minutes in I was joined by a young man who was looking for a place to sit. I was thinking for a long time whether to start a conversation with him, seeing as we were both alone. Well, I though. I never reach out to anyone at school. So I thought I should.

Johan is 18 and he's a freshman this year at the U of BS (bending spoons). He came here straight from high school graduation because he wanted to escape the suburbs of Philadelphia so badly. So he ventured here on his own because even thought his mother bawled her eyes out as she begged him to stay, he felt that it was time for him to face the world and become a man. As if university showcases the reality of "the world" I remarked bitterly. Thankfully he laughed rather than getting offended by what I said.Instead, he just asked about what I was doing here. I debated about what kind of information I should disclose to this hopeful freshman... I decided to tell him the truth. I told him that I came to UBS because at my school, that is just what everyone did, even if they didn't know what they wanted from it. I thought for so long that in order to be a decent human being I had to get a university level education, and soon enough I actually made myself believe that this was what I wanted. I paused then - the biggest flaw about me is that I always have to have the last word, even when I know I shouldn't say it. I felt ashamed, and I quickly apologized for sounding so jaded. But he laughed and he was relieved to hear that in the end, I'm glad that I ended up here. Before we could continue though, a friend of mine spotted my head amidst the sea of people, cutting my conversation with Johan short. Anyways, we exchanged goodbyes, and as soon as I arose from my seat, we became strangers again. I wonder til now what had allowed two strangers to talk so openly, sharing our past and future expectations. Maybe it was the bustling noise around us, creating a private sanctuary; we felt like we could say anything and not be heard by anyone else.

Or maybe it was the fact that this wasn't real.

To be honest, I thought that it would be so cool to talk to a complete stranger, but I kept stalling and in the end both of us ate in silence, occupied by our phones (I actually am writing this as he sits across from me - metaaaaaaaaaaa). But I feel like maybe this is the way it could have gone down in an alternate universe.

one of my favourite images

On a side note that is sorta relevant, today my 14 year old sister really surprised me. We were on the bus listening to Death Cab when out of the blue she said to me that she thinks that we are all born into this world, all meant to do something different, but we just end up doing what everyone else is doing... sometimes her wisdom scares me.

Ginger Thoughts: Guilt

I'm an extremely emotional person and when I'm faced with guilt it suffocates me for a long long time. It numbs me and I drag out this process of rationalizing what I've done. I tutor a number of students, and I have a policy that my minimum time for each student is 1.5 hours/session. There is one kid who I've been tutoring an hour a week because of summer break, and today I asked the student's mom for an hour and a half since school is picking up again. She gave me this very apologetic look and said that she would look over her financials as she just quit her job because of harassment. A wave of guilt just washed over me and all I could say was "Oh, it's okay then, it's okay." She asked me for a 10 dollar discount, which was going to offer her anyway, so when I assured her that was perfectly fine, she seemed delighted, saying how much her kid loved me and was learning a lot. So the deal was made, and I left her house saying goodbye. Then I got into my car and I cried. I felt so guilty that I just wanted an extra 40 dollars a month. I felt so guilty for always prioritizing my time over others. My Dad says that he's sure it's not that big of a deal and it's not going to bankrupt them, but I wish I could take back what I said. I'm happy teaching her kid, and I could earn that money somewhere else if I had to.

Do these kind of situations eat you up or what?

Featured Artist of the Month: Azuré - September 2013

This is gonna be a new segment I’ll be writing since well I really like music, but then again who doesn't. I'm constantly looking for music via 8tracks or Youtube and creating my own playlists. When I feel confident enough, I’ll share with you guys my 8tracks account.

This month I’m gonna feature an artist who I think is totally underrated and whom I’ve admired for the past year: Azuré aka Justin Park. He definitely falls under one of my top favourite hip hop artists or as I like to call, "clothing store hip-hop".  A lot of his music just puts a smile on your face and definitely makes you involuntarily “hip-hop-nod” your head with the beat. *my expressions are weird…I know*

Sadly, I didn’t realize he came to Vancouver a few weeks ago with the HBK Gang until I decided to do some research for this post. FRUSTRATION. Then again, I don’t really go to shows, but still, UGH.
Concert dates for the rest of the month. Jealous of all you Cali people.
His chill hip hop music has some smooth jazz elements to it that are just so relaxing and really suitable for any mood. His songs are laidback enough to add to your study playlist for all you fellow students out there but also great for like a chill house party. “Chill” is a word I use a lot and don’t plan on replacing with synonyms. I am sorry…not really haha. The song that made me become a fan is “So Nice.” The sample, the beat, the lyrics create a guaranteed feel good mood. It’s a great song to put on something like a friendship mixtape. The lyrics make you feel like you’re not alone and that no matter what, there’s always going to be someone there for you. So, whenever you’re feeling down or lonely, just play this track and put a smile on your face. =]

Before the summer, I purchased his Mint Condition album via Bandcamp. Track 9 – Love Supreme (Feat. Jeni Suk) is one of my favourite songs. The featured artist is another artist I quite like. Her voice gives a nice clean feeling and contrast to Azure’s somewhat raspy voice. What I like most about this song is that her part provides the song with an ultra-smooth R&B counterpart to the hip-hop beat.

If you guys want to listen to full tracks from his albums and mixtapes, go check out his stuff on bandcamp for FREE: http://azureee.bandcamp.com/ If you end up liking his stuff, please support this artist by either purchasing an album or subscribing to his Youtube channel.

Signing off,
Steph

Letters

In my opinion, snail mail is definitely not a dead form of communication. Sure, the internet is faster, but I love having a pen pal and sharing personal messages via love-filled hand-written letters.

This isn't specifically a DIY tutorial, since I'm sure everyone knows how to write letters, but these are some ways you can make your personal notes more vibrant and colourful.

1) Special Letter Paper and Stickers

Being the Queen of Crafting (hah - I am not) and also Korean I have a plethora of cute letter papers and stickers. They are actually quite inexpensive and come in so many varieties that these should become a must in your next hand-written letter. There are some letter papers that I acquired while visiting Kimchi a go go land, but there are some that you can purchase here as well, or you can make your own. Even one of those thicker, vanilla-toned resume papers will do the trick. As for stickers, it goes that extra distance in expressing your thoughts and emotions.

2) Drawing and other thoughtful things

This here is a letter for my good friend Nigel Bartholomew who is Toronto for work-related purposes. I drew him a sketch of our group. You can  see Nigel and me very clearly, as I have focused the picture on us (I'm a diva). Steph is that little crazy bundle to the right of me. Below that I added a few of the tiny "preview" photos that I received when I developed a set of pictures for my Photo Line. I just cut them out and linked them with my trusty poo stickers. I think it really adds a nice nostalgic touch. I hope this makes him miss home, buhahaha!

3) The Best Stamps ever

Stamps are all the same price (unless bought in bulk at Costco), so why not nab the adorable ones?

Stella's a ginger!!
Anyways, the sky's the limit when it comes to being creative. Add the extra touch your loved ones deserve and show them that they are worth your time. Seriously, a hand-written letter feels really good to receive, especially when all you really get in the mail are bills and more bills. We've all become so busy and wrapped up in our own lives that we don't even spend the time to write to one another anymore? When did we become too good for good ol' fashion pen and paper? If you want, comment on here and I will personally hand-write you a letter to show you how much I love and appreciate you.
